I've written an article about the story behind WebCrimson:

I've pulled together a quick features list for WebCrimson v 2.0, if you're curious what we do.  Here's the short version:

  • We let you easily create blogs and zines
  • After you hit publish, we generate the pages for you and FTP them to your server.
    • Or if you don't have a server, we'll host it for free at yourname.crimsonblog.com or yourname.crimsonzine.com.
  • You use WebCrimson through the browser, so there's no software to install on your server or PC
  • We support all browsers and operating systems
  • We also support multiple templates and multiple users.

Really, we do just about everything you could want.  But the best way to get a feel for our features is to just start a free blog or zine (we'll host it for you for free):

  • CrimsonBlog.com - This lets you create and host a free weblog
  • CrimsonZine.com - This lets you create and host a free webzine

Let us know what you think!

Hi, I'm blogger John Hiler. You might remember me from such medical films as "Alice Doesn't Live Anymore" and "Mommy, What's Wrong With That Man's Face?".

Or if you haven't seen those fine films, I also write Microcontent News, an online magazine covering weblogs, webzines, and personal publishing.  I've been using my own software (WebCrimson) to update Microcontent News, but it's only recently that we've made it easy for anyone to use WebCrimson to start a blog or zine.

I'll pull together a feature list for WebCrimson soon.  If I had to tout one cool feature right now, it'd probably be our WYSIWYG editor.  But the problem with mentioning that is that whenever I say we support wizzy editing in Internet Explorer, people get the idea that we don't support other browsers.  We've worked really hard to support Opera, Netscape, and other browsers...  we've even made WebCrimson work with Netscape 4.0!  Trust me: I tested it on all those browsers personally.

So yeah, now WebCrimson supports both point-and-click free blogs and zines: you can check them out at CrimsonBlog.com and CrimsonZine.com.

Both sites are powered by our WebCrimson engine, the content management tool we've been bootstrapping with website consulting.  It does a lot more than blogs and zines: we've got it powering Press Releases, Media Mentions, company lists, job listings, FAQs, and just about everything our clients have asked of us over the course of two years!

Up until now, WebCrimson's been more for our consulting team than for anyone else.  But now with CrimsonBlog.com and CrimsonZine.com, you can set up a webcrimson-powered site by yourself pretty easily.

We're working now on making it equally easy to add all that other stuff...  and adding documentation for all of our features.  Stay tuned!

A quick overview of our sites:

  • CrimsonBlog.com - this is where you can create blogs, hosted either at yourname.crimsonblog.com or on your own server.

  • CrimsonZine.com - you can create your own zines here, hosted at yourname.crimsonzine.com... or of course, you can FTP it to your own server

  • WebCrimson.com - this is the content management software that supports both crimsonblog and crimsonzine sites.  Whatever site you create, you can come here to update it...
